History:
There are about 100 Hydrangea species scattered around the world, some of which are found in the wild. Hydrangeas are especially common in China and Japan. The first Hydrangea to grow and flower in a European garden around 1736 was the Hydrangea aborescens, which came from North America. This one had small flowers, which people did not find very attractive.

Significance:
Hydrangea is derived from the Greek hydor, meaning water, and aggeion, meaning vessel.
