History:
Gale (Myrica gale) occurs naturally in the Netherlands. The shrub occurred in our country as early as the Boreal (7000 - 5500 BC); the time that largely coincided with the so-called New Stone Age. The Boreal was characterised by a climate similar to our present-day climate, but less volatile.
Significance:
Myrica is derived from the Greek myrike, which is the name Homer gave for Tamarix.
