History:
Agapanthus, also known as African lily, is native to South Africa and belongs to the Liliaceae family. Since the 17th century, the Agapanthus has probably appeared in Europe as a deciduous plant. It took quite a while for people to find out that deciduous Agapanthuses also existed.
Significance:
Agapanthus is derived from the Greek agapè, literally meaning love, and anthos, standing for flower.
